  • FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE | Mvla San Jose

Work Scholarship MVLA San Jose Soccer Club provides a need-based work scholarship program to help cover club dues and coaching fees for families in need of financial assistance. The program does not cover uniforms, tournaments, travel, lodging, apparel or miscellaneous expenses. Each year the club budgets a set amount to support the work scholarship program, but this does not guarantee that all applicants will receive support. APPLICATION PROCESS The MVLA San Jose Financial Assistance Committee follows the guidelines of the Work Scholarship program to make all aid decisions. In order to qualify, a family must complete an application per player and provide proof of eligibility. Families will be notified by email or phone call within 4 weeks of program application acceptance or denial. Families that received a work scholarship award will need to re-apply in the fall of each seasonal year. Please complete the Application Form and submit updated documents as listed on the form. ELIGIBILITY The work scholarship program is a need-based program that is awarded to families based upon their income. A family’s income level is qualified using the stated Santa Clara County Income Limits. The program is offered to all players regardless of where they live. The player applicant must be a full-time student with a GPA of 2.5 or above. Work Scholarship award recipients are required to participate in club-wide fundraising, and perform ~30 league specified service hours. Recipient(s) risk future eligibility if they aren't committed to assisting in these efforts. How the Work Scholarship Program Works: 1. Register Your Player(s) When registering, please select the Work Scholarship payment option. This will allow you to pay only $50 at the time of registration. 2. Complete the Work Scholarship Application After registration, you will need to complete the Work Scholarship Application , which asks some basic questions and requires you to upload supporting documentation. This information helps us determine the level of financial need. 3. Submit the Work Scholarship Commitment Form You will then complete the Work Scholarship Commitment Form , where you can select from a variety of volunteer jobs available throughout the season. The roles you select will help us determine your scholarship award amount. How Awards Are Calculated: Each hour worked/volunteered will represent 1% of an award toward your player’s dues. For example: If you work 30 hours , you will receive a 30% reduction in your dues. If your dues are $1,000 , you will be awarded $300.00 . This award will also count toward your fundraising efforts and the two amounts will be combined to reduce the over total cost of your dues. MVLA SAN JOSE FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE QUALIFICATION CHART The player applicant must be a full-time student with a GPA of 2.5 and above. Please refer to the chart on the financial assistance form for more information. IMPORTANT Proof of current of previous semester report card Percentage of work scholarship award will be based on Santa Clara County Income Limits and number of people in the household For questions about MVLA San Jose's Financial Aid Program, please contact cluboperations@mvlasj.com . BOYS TEAMS The MVLA boys program is focused on the proven player development approach that has earned MVLA and its world-class players a strong reputation for their skill, teamwork and overall character at any age group. HOW TO JOIN 27 State Championships 20+ Youth National Team Players 3 National Championships Boys Premier Leagues The program today is guided by Technical Director Mark Landefeld and Executive Director Jodi Washington. Their first-hand experience as players has had such an impact on their own lives that they want to share with as many athletes as possible. The boys play in both NorCal Premier and Cal North Soccer Leagues . The primary focus of a successful soccer program will be the individual player and their families. The primary focus of soccer coaches, teams and clubs will be the development of children as people first and players second. Individual player development will be a club's primary focus and team success a secondary but important goal. NPL believe the NorCal Premier Soccer League offers a league supporting the players, parents, coaches and clubs in this endeavor. The mission of Cal North is to serve all children and our communities by providing opportunities that allow each child to grow, learn, mature and succeed by becoming productive adult members of society through the development, promotion, and offering, regardless of race, color, religion, age, sex, national origin and/or ability, comprehensive community based leagues that offer a complete range of youth soccer opportunities for all children of all ages and abilities. • COMMUNICATION PROTOCOL | Mvla San Jose

COMMUNICATION PROTOCOL Communication is a pinnacle for a team to run smoothly. This applies to practice, games, or organizing an event. The coach and manager will be in communication often through email. Between them, they will ensure changes to games/practices/changes are conveyed as quickly as new information is confirmed. As events can change on short notice, parents are encouraged to check your email and Byga often, to ensure you are up to date with team arrangements/commitments. AGE 11 & YOUNGER Who talks and to Whom? Parents talk to coach Communication Route: Wait 24 hours to reach out – cooling off period Wait until AFTER practice, NEVER interrupt practice. Our coaches try to maximize their instruction time with players and often times, have another practice or commitment immediately following your player’s event. Email, text or phone call (Coaches should communicate at the beginning of the season the best way to reach them.) Face to face appointments if personal issues. If your complaint/concern is legitimate, and not properly or fully addressed, initiate the escalation process, described later. AGE: 12U-14U Who talks and to Whom? Players and parents talk to coach together. Communication Route: Wait 24 hours to reach out – cooling off period Wait until AFTER practice, NEVER interrupt practice. Email, text or phone call (using coaches preferred way of contact) Face to face appointments if personal issues Please encourage your child to show the self‐confidence to approach the coach, perhaps you may want to rehearse with your child the first few times. Young players are likely to be nervous, but should never feel afraid of speaking to their coach. The coach’s job is to help nurture their love of soccer and help develop their skills. If your complaint/concern is legitimate, and not fully or properly addressed by the coach, initiate the escalation process. AGE 15U & OLDER Player talks to the coach In these age groups, the players will most likely want to be handling their own problems themselves. We encourage self-advocacy and want the players to take the initiative. That being said, we understand that parents may have problems/issues as well and those are appropriate to direct to the coach. If a player has an issue that is not resolved after following the outreach steps listed here, the parent can initiate the escalation process and address the matter from there. Parents should also follow the escalation process for any matters that they have been unable to get resolved directly as well. COMMUNICATION TIMEFRAME/EXPECTATIONS Feedback and responsiveness to player and parent communications is part of setting a good example and contributes to the type of experience that players have. Thus, it is important that coaches, managers respond to texts, emails or phone messages from players or parents within a reasonable timeframe. That would normally be within 2-3 days of the player or parent outreach. The coach/manager may not have every answer available to questions/issues raised, but will follow up with the player or parent to acknowledge the communications and will follow up in a timely manner with the answer if not immediately known. If the coach does not know how to answer the matter, he or she should reach out to the Director of Coaching for additional advice or guidance. Responsiveness to questions or concerns raised set an example and how MVLA San Jose officials (coach, team manager) respond to communications demonstrates their respect and sensitivity to player or parent matters brought to their attention. Communications not addressed by the coach may be escalated by the parent (for himself/herself or player issues unresolved) using the club escalation process as described below. ESCALATION PROCESS As a club, we are trying to create a climate fostering better communications. As noted, communication is a vital piece in helping ensure a better experience for our players, parents, coaches – our entire soccer community. If an MVLA San Jose official (coach, team manager) does not acknowledge a communication within 2-3 days, the parent/player should follow up to confirm that the communication was received. The recipient should respond that the message has been received and is being researched or reviewed further. The contacted MVLA San Jose official should set a timeframe for providing a full answer or lay out a plan for addressing the issue/concern raised within a reasonable time (up to a week). Multiple offenses of not addressing matters raised in a timely and professional manner may result in disciplinary action against the MVLA San Jose official who has not taken appropriate action to acknowledge and address communications. If the issue has not been responded to and discussed with the parent or player making the inquiry within a week, the requestor should complete the club communication Escalation Form. This form will be filled out, indicating the day and manner in which the parent/player first reached out, the nature of issue and the date(s) on which the MVLA San Jose official should have responded. An issue may also be escalated if the issue raised has not been addressed fully to the requestor’s satisfaction. This would follow the same process. Before submitting the escalation form, the submitter (parent or coach) should review this entire communication document, as well as the code of conduct in place for whatever his or her role is to ensure a full understanding of expectations of all parties involved. The completed form will be submitted electronically and received by a committee consisting of several MVLA San Jose Operations members. All escalations submitted will be acknowledged and responded to in 3 or less business days. ESCALATION FORM

  • FAQ | Mvla San Jose

frequently asked questions Team Roles Teams Games BYGA Fees Registration Uniforms Practices MVLA San Jose Programs MVLA San Jose Policies What is the role of the team coach? MVLA San Jose teams are coached by licensed professional soccer coaches. MVLA San Jose’s success is directly attributable to its amazing coaches. These individuals not only have a love for the game, but they also have a passion for working with and developing youths. Our coaches encourage players to be their best, on the field, in the classroom, and more. The coach directs the team’s practice sessions and coaches at games and tournaments. The coach makes decisions regarding team rosters, playing time, tournaments, and leagues. The team coach communicates feedback about the player to the family. Families are asked to provide an evaluation of the coach at the end of the season. What is the role of the team manager? The team manager is the liaison between the coach, the club and the parents. The team manager handles and oversees the team administration which includes communication, scheduling, registering for tournaments, ensuring players are eligible for games (player passes, rosters, forms, etc.), team finances, etc. Tasks can and should be delegated to other parents on the team. The team manager does NOT coach, sit on the players’ side, make decisions about rosters or playing time, and decide on tournaments. What is the role of the team treasurer? If the team manager elects to have a treasurer, the team treasurer establishes the team budget and collects fees from the families for additional team expenses (non-MVLA San Jose registration fees) that the team incurs (tournament fees, coach’s travel expenses, referee fees for more than 6 home games, social events, coach gift, etc.). What is the role of the team scheduler? If the team manager elects to have a scheduler, the team scheduler works with opposing teams to schedule the date, time, and field for all league games. The scheduler uses GotSoccer to communicate with the opposing teams and Byga to schedule home games. What is the role of ALL parents on the team? All parents are expected to help out during the season. This includes coordinating social events and travel logistics or game-day help such as setting up and taking down goals for the home games. Parents can also help with carrying and setting up the team bench and team canopy. Our team managers are volunteers, so please offer to help your team as much as possible on game day and whenever there are other needs of the team.

  • CODE OF CONDUCT | Mvla San Jose

CODE OF CONDUCT In an effort to enhance the experience for all members of the MVLA San Jose community (coaches, players, and parents), we believe it is important to have a clear set of expectations and a shared understanding for each of these key members of our community. Please click on each of the areas below to view details of codes of conduct for coaches, players, and parents. Also, visit the Communication Protocol page to read about our club philosophy on communication processes. Parent Code of Conduct Player Code of Conduct Coach Code Of Conduct WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE VALUE MVLA San Jose values hard work, commitment, and excellence both on and off of the field. MVLASJ believes that its parents can play a vital role in impacting and positively representing the MVLA San Jose community through the examples we set to our players/children. To ensure the best possible experience for our players and in the spirit of good sportsmanship, we expect our parents (and any family/friends who come with them to games as spectators) to be positive and supportive to all players. Parents/Spectators participate in a match by watching, cheering, and supporting the efforts of all participants of the match. Soccer should be fun. The game is for the players; their participation and enjoyment of the game is the most important element. Still, parents have responsibilities to the coach, to the team, and to the entire MVLA San Jose. COMMUNICATIONS A parent should feel it is acceptable to bring questions or issues to the coach, team manager, or a board member’s attention and that the person contacted will respond in an appropriate and timely manner. Communications will be acknowledged in a timely manner (typically no more than 2-3 days) with appropriate follow-up as needed. Communications that are not responded to or handled satisfactorily may be escalated following club processes. It is the parent’s role to escalate items either not personally resolved or those for which his or her player has been unable to get addressed. Click HERE for Escalation Form. AVAILABILITY CHANGES If a player cannot attend practice due to unforeseen circumstances, then that player is required to notify their coach as soon as it is possible to do so. For changes to availability on a game day, the player (or parent if a younger player) should text the coach and advise if the player can no longer participate in a game. For practices, the parent should annotate the change in availability in Byga and contact the coach or team manager in line with whatever expectations that coach/team has in place additionally. CONFLICT MANAGEMENT Should a conflict arise between MVLA San Jose coaches, players, or parents it is required that such confrontations be addressed in the appropriate manner (with respect), and at the appropriate time (privately). While the coaches are committed to open communication with parents, there is a certain process that should be observed. In particular, the time before and during a game is dedicated to the players. It is not appropriate for a parent to approach a coach to discuss game or individual player concerns at this time. The coach will be happy to set up a meeting/phone call to address parent concerns at a time that will not interfere with the attention required by the players. An exception to this request is an incident when a player is injured. The coaches will be available immediately after a game to discuss the situation and any concerns with parents. FEES It is understood by accepting a roster spot for their child on an MVLA San Jose team that the parents are committing to pay club and team's fees for their player(s) in a timely fashion. If parents fall behind in payments, their player(s) may not be allowed to train with the team, and/or may be ineligible for any games while fees remain outstanding. REVIEW AND SIGN Review and sign the complete MVLA Parents Code of Conduct .
