Hard work, always pays off no matter what you do ", he said. “When a player doesn’t believe they can do something, and with hard work achieve their goal, that is the reason I coach. • COMMUNICATION PROTOCOL | Mvla San Jose

COMMUNICATION PROTOCOL Communication is a pinnacle for a team to run smoothly. This applies to practice, games, or organizing an event. The coach and manager will be in communication often through email. Between them, they will ensure changes to games/practices/changes are conveyed as quickly as new information is confirmed. As events can change on short notice, parents are encouraged to check your email and Byga often, to ensure you are up to date with team arrangements/commitments. AGE 11 & YOUNGER Who talks and to Whom? Parents talk to coach Communication Route: • Wait 24 hours to reach out – cooling off period • Wait until AFTER practice, NEVER interrupt practice. Our coaches try to maximize their instruction time with players and often times, have another practice or commitment immediately following your player’s event. • Email, text or phone call (Coaches should communicate at the beginning of the season the best way to reach them.) • Face to face appointments if personal issues. • If your complaint/concern is legitimate, and not properly or fully addressed, initiate the escalation process, described later. AGE: 12U-14U Who talks and to Whom? Players and parents talk to coach together. Communication Route: • Wait 24 hours to reach out – cooling off period • Wait until AFTER practice, NEVER interrupt practice. • Email, text or phone call (using coaches preferred way of contact) • Face to face appointments if personal issues • Please encourage your child to show the self‐confidence to approach the coach, perhaps you may want to rehearse with your child the first few times. Young players are likely to be nervous, but should never feel afraid of speaking to their coach. The coach’s job is to help nurture their love of soccer and help develop their skills. • If your complaint/concern is legitimate, and not fully or properly addressed by the coach, initiate the escalation process. AGE 15U & OLDER Player talks to the coach In these age groups, the players will most likely want to be handling their own problems themselves. We encourage self-advocacy and want the players to take the initiative. That being said, we understand that parents may have problems/issues as well and those are appropriate to direct to the coach. If a player has an issue that is not resolved after following the outreach steps listed here, the parent can initiate the escalation process and address the matter from there. Parents should also follow the escalation process for any matters that they have been unable to get resolved directly as well. COMMUNICATION TIMEFRAME/EXPECTATIONS Feedback and responsiveness to player and parent communications is part of setting a good example and contributes to the type of experience that players have. Thus, it is important that coaches, managers respond to texts, emails or phone messages from players or parents within a reasonable timeframe. That would normally be within 2-3 days of the player or parent outreach. The coach/manager may not have every answer available to questions/issues raised, but will follow up with the player or parent to acknowledge the communications and will follow up in a timely manner with the answer if not immediately known. If the coach does not know how to answer the matter, he or she should reach out to the Director of Coaching for additional advice or guidance. Responsiveness to questions or concerns raised set an example and how MVLA San Jose officials (coach, team manager) respond to communications demonstrates their respect and sensitivity to player or parent matters brought to their attention. Communications not addressed by the coach may be escalated by the parent (for himself/herself or player issues unresolved) using the club escalation process as described below. ESCALATION PROCESS As a club, we are trying to create a climate fostering better communications. As noted, communication is a vital piece in helping ensure a better experience for our players, parents, coaches – our entire soccer community. If an MVLA San Jose official (coach, team manager) does not acknowledge a communication within 2-3 days, the parent/player should follow up to confirm that the communication was received. The recipient should respond that the message has been received and is being researched or reviewed further. The contacted MVLA San Jose official should set a timeframe for providing a full answer or lay out a plan for addressing the issue/concern raised within a reasonable time (up to a week). Multiple offenses of not addressing matters raised in a timely and professional manner may result in disciplinary action against the MVLA San Jose official who has not taken appropriate action to acknowledge and address communications. If the issue has not been responded to and discussed with the parent or player making the inquiry within a week, the requestor should complete the club communication Escalation Form. This form will be filled out, indicating the day and manner in which the parent/player first reached out, the nature of issue and the date(s) on which the MVLA San Jose official should have responded. An issue may also be escalated if the issue raised has not been addressed fully to the requestor’s satisfaction. This would follow the same process. Before submitting the escalation form, the submitter (parent or coach) should review this entire communication document, as well as the code of conduct in place for whatever his or her role is to ensure a full understanding of expectations of all parties involved. The completed form will be submitted electronically and received by a committee consisting of several MVLA San Jose Operations members. All escalations submitted will be acknowledged and responded to in 3 or less business days. ESCALATION FORM

  • Michael Alvares | Mvla San Jose

Michael Alvarez Born and raised here in San Jose. Started playing soccer when I was 4 years old and never stopped playing. Went to Santa Teresa high School and played all 4 years there. Ended senior year earning MVP. Red shirted for a year at West Valley college for a year and really started focusing on coaching after that. Spent Covid year training virtually and as things opened up a bit, obtained the D level license from U.S. soccer. Started coaching summer camps and and moved on quickly to helping out different teams. Eventually coaching a 2002 team for South San Jose. Once that team disbanded, I moved on and started helping out Jodi Washington with Central Valley that turned into the earthquakes academy program. We then decided to leave the earthquakes to start up the San Jose Surf girls side before finally stopping here at MVLASJ. Also found myself coaching the Santa Teresa High School Girls program over the last 5 years. Controlling the Varsity for the last 4. For me my biggest inspiration has always been my old club coach Steve Sellers. He has taught me a lot in not only the game of soccer but just how to be a good human. Taught me that this is more then just a game. The best part about coaching is just bringing the game that I have always loved and to a new generation of players. Seeing their reaction when they finally nail a move or hit a banger of a shot is priceless. It's really hard to pick 1 moment because just being with my team was great. If I had to pick one it probably was playing in a tournament and scoring a goal to start the comeback after conceding 2 goals and getting a red card with in the team and ending up wining the game to get to the championship. Coaching wise probably has to be when we were down by 3 goals and in the last 12 minutes of the game, winning 2 PKs and scoring 2 more goals to win the game all in the last 12 minutes of the game. Growing up watching a lot teams play. My team has to be Manchester City. Just watching them play has always been fun. Back in 2012 watching them win the league title right after Manchester United won the game and within 10 minutes City scored 2 goals in stoppage time to steal the title away from them was great to see. Special things goes to my old coach Steve and to Jodi for giving me a chance to coach club over the last couple years. Biggest thanks to my parents though for always helping me in whatever I do.

  • CODE OF CONDUCT | Mvla San Jose

CODE OF CONDUCT In an effort to enhance the experience for all members of the MVLA San Jose community (coaches, players, and parents), we believe it is important to have a clear set of expectations and a shared understanding for each of these key members of our community. Please click on each of the areas below to view details of codes of conduct for coaches, players, and parents. Also, visit the Communication Protocol page to read about our club philosophy on communication processes. Parent Code of Conduct Player Code of Conduct Coach Code Of Conduct WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE VALUE MVLA San Jose values hard work, commitment, and excellence both on and off of the field. MVLASJ believes that its parents can play a vital role in impacting and positively representing the MVLA San Jose community through the examples we set to our players/children. To ensure the best possible experience for our players and in the spirit of good sportsmanship, we expect our parents (and any family/friends who come with them to games as spectators) to be positive and supportive to all players. Parents/Spectators participate in a match by watching, cheering, and supporting the efforts of all participants of the match. Soccer should be fun. The game is for the players; their participation and enjoyment of the game is the most important element. Still, parents have responsibilities to the coach, to the team, and to the entire MVLA San Jose. COMMUNICATIONS A parent should feel it is acceptable to bring questions or issues to the coach, team manager, or a board member’s attention and that the person contacted will respond in an appropriate and timely manner. Communications will be acknowledged in a timely manner (typically no more than 2-3 days) with appropriate follow-up as needed. Communications that are not responded to or handled satisfactorily may be escalated following club processes. It is the parent’s role to escalate items either not personally resolved or those for which his or her player has been unable to get addressed. Click HERE (https://mvlasj.byga.net/f/o1yrw502)for Escalation Form. AVAILABILITY CHANGES If a player cannot attend practice due to unforeseen circumstances, then that player is required to notify their coach as soon as it is possible to do so. For changes to availability on a game day, the player (or parent if a younger player) should text the coach and advise if the player can no longer participate in a game. For practices, the parent should annotate the change in availability in Byga and contact the coach or team manager in line with whatever expectations that coach/team has in place additionally. CONFLICT MANAGEMENT Should a conflict arise between MVLA San Jose coaches, players, or parents it is required that such confrontations be addressed in the appropriate manner (with respect), and at the appropriate time (privately). While the coaches are committed to open communication with parents, there is a certain process that should be observed. In particular, the time before and during a game is dedicated to the players. It is not appropriate for a parent to approach a coach to discuss game or individual player concerns at this time. The coach will be happy to set up a meeting/phone call to address parent concerns at a time that will not interfere with the attention required by the players. An exception to this request is an incident when a player is injured. The coaches will be available immediately after a game to discuss the situation and any concerns with parents. FEES It is understood by accepting a roster spot for their child on an MVLA San Jose team that the parents are committing to pay club and team's fees for their player(s) in a timely fashion. If parents fall behind in payments, their player(s) may not be allowed to train with the team, and/or may be ineligible for any games while fees remain outstanding.
